Looking for baby care tips in getting through the first months of your baby’s life? Here’s a collection of practical parenting advice that you can really use..

–> When I was four months pregnant, my husband accepted a new job on the other side of the country. I was terrified of leaving my family and friends and proceeded to buy every highly recommended baby book I could find. I pored over these books, highlighter in hand, hoping to find all the answers to pregnancy and parenting.

–> After birth, my newborn immediately became the guinea pig for the countless techniques I had learned. But once my daughter was squirming and wailing in my arms at 4 AM, I realized some of the methods I read were more effective than others.

–> After much trial and error, I discovered the following techniques were the most successful for my family. These are practical, time-tested methods that often work for real-world parents. Think of them as the CliffsNotes to baby care.

–> Swaddling is comforting to many newborns because it reminds them of being inside the womb.

“Swaddling is a helpful tool, but it is not universal,” explains Dr. Gregory Germain, MD, a pediatrician at Yale-New Haven Children’s Hospital in Connecticut. “Some babies are truly comforted by a tight swaddle, and some babies are irritated by a tight swaddle and do better with their hands free,” he explains.

–> If you decide to swaddle your baby, be sure he isn’t getting overheated. “At night, over-bundling has been questionably linked to SIDS (via overheating),” says Dr. Karen Sadler, MD, a pediatrician in Boston, Massachusetts. “In general, infants should be clothed in whatever adults need to be comfortable, plus one thin layer.” If your baby feels sweaty or hot in his blanket, try dressing him in nothing but a diaper before swaddling him. If he still feels hot, stop swaddling altogether.

Spoil Away!

–> During the first few months of your child’s life, there’s no such thing as giving too much tender love and care. “Babies need to know that you are there when they are distressed,” says Dr. Germain. “Going to a crying young infant and comforting her is never a bad thing.”

–> While it’s important to let your baby know you’re there for her, it is OK to occasionally let her cry for a minute or two. “If your baby is crying and you’re in the middle of a load of wash, there is no harm in letting your baby cry for a while as you’re finishing your other life duties,” Dr. Germain assures.

–> Setting a consistent nighttime routine such as a warm bath and bedtime story can be a helpful sleep trigger for your baby. It may not work right away, but after a couple of weeks your child will likely fall asleep easier and stay asleep longer.

–> According to Dr. Robert Jacobson, MD, chairman and professor of pediatrics with the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, this bedtime routine should include creating a peaceful setting in the home.

–> “As twilight comes and the house gets quieter, probably the most important thing in this modern age is to turn the TV off an hour before the baby is going to fall asleep,” he says, explaining that the TV tends to charge the air and keep babies awake.

–> Some people worry that they’ll spoil their baby with a swing, but all bets are off for the first few months of life. If your baby refuses to nap in his crib during the day, but easily falls asleep in his swing, by all means let him swing to his little heart’s content!

–> Keep in mind, you should never leave your baby unattended or let him sleep in the swing through the night. “The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) warns that some infants might curl over in a seat and obstruct breathing,” explains Dr. Sadler. “In practice, I think if parents are awake and watching, and the child isn’t small or premature, the swing is OK,” says Dr. Saddler, adding that swings are a good way to get colicky babies to sleep.

Turn Down the Monitor

–> Turn your baby monitor down to the lowest volume or off altogether. And stop worrying if you’re in earshot of your baby’s room, you’ll mostly likely hear her cries when she really needs you. “We can hear a baby crying without any technology from across the hall,” says Dr. Germain. “I think this is a parental comfort issue.”

–> Dr. Sadler adds that the baby monitor is better for older infants whose parents can then be out in the yard but still aware of when the baby awakens.

–> If your baby likes the pacifier, let him have it!

“I think that about one-third of babies have massive physiologic drives to suck. They take to the pacifier and it is a great comfort to them,” says Dr. Germain. Another reason to let your little one have a pacifier: The AAP states that pacifiers may help to reduce the risk of SIDS.

–> If you’re sold on your baby using a pacifier but she just won’t take one, try different brands. Eventually you may find one that she likes.

–> “Self-settling is an important developmental task that all babies need to learn,” says Dr. Germain. According to most experts, this should be attacked in the four- to six-month range.

–> There are many ways to teach your baby to soothe herself to sleep, and you’ll need to determine which method is right for you. Some of the techniques include letting your baby cry it out for increasing periods of time, hanging out in the nursery and patting her back until she falls asleep, or coming into the nursery every few minutes to show her you’re still there.

–> “Whether you are a Ferber, a Weissbluth, or another sleep specialist fan … this is a parental job which fosters good sleep habits for the rest of the child’s years,” says Dr. Germain.

No Over-Napping

–> Although the old adage says, never wake a sleeping a baby, modern-day pediatricians stress that babies should not nap for more than an hour and a half to two hours at a time during the day.

–> “You want the baby tired at bedtime, so you want to avoid long, drawn out naps during the day,” Dr. Jacobson explains. “That’s probably the most effective thing I know to signal that it’s nighttime that the baby has had a day when he’s been mainly awake.”

–> Dr. Jacobson also explains that you shouldn’t allow your baby to sleep through daytime feedings. “You should nurse every two hours. If you’re bottle feeding with a formula, usually you should feed every three to four hours.” This kind of routine ensures that your baby will not only be tired at bedtime, but he’ll also be well fed and more likely to sleep through the night.

–> Because we live in a time-driven society, many of us feel the need to put our newborns on a schedule; but Dr. Sadler says this parenting idea is outdated.

–> “Newborns need to eat often and should determine that pattern,” she explains. “By four months, most babies have settled into a rhythm and are sleeping through the night, so this is when to start [a schedule] for babies who haven’t yet settled on their own.”

–> Dr. Germain adds, “Do you make a hungry baby wait two hours for his next feed to fit your schedule?” He explains that scheduling may work better for older babies. “Babies have a more organized eating and sleep schedule by six months, but many not until nine months of age.”

–> Although there is a lot helpful baby advice out there, no book can tell you what feels right when it comes to your baby. It all comes down to following your instincts, and every parent’s instincts are a little different.

–> If you try a new method, ncluding some of the tips in this article, and it doesn’t work for your baby or simply doesn’t feel right to you, don’t force it. In the end, mother (and father!) knows best.

At the outset, organizing a family vacation can seem as daunting as landing a probe on Mars. Better to stay home and watch the Discovery Channel, you think — maybe toast a few marshmallows in the fireplace.

The truth is that planning an adventurous vacation can be fun, especially if you prepare for it in advance and involve your kids. The onerous part is remembering all the things you have to think about.

That’s where we come in. This introduction covers family travel from A to Z, from deciding where to go, to getting there and making the most of your vacation. Some of this may seem like old news to you, but we want to make sure you don’t forget a thing.

How much do we spend?

Chances are, you already know approximately what you have to spend on a vacation — and you’ve already got a modus operandi when it comes to money matters. Maybe you’re a family that carefully figures a budget, then finds a vacation to fit it. Or maybe you’re the type to set your heart on a once-in-a-lifetime trip, then scrimp and save until you can make it happen.

Determine the type of trip you will take. Before you even start your planning, take a moment to consider: what kind of trip are you taking? Are you splurging on a dream vacation, or conserving on a semi-annual getaway? What aspects of this trip are most important to you?

Budget carefully. Once you know what those broad parameters are, the next step is to think through your vacation budget in detail — if not at the outset of planning, then at an opportune point along the way. When you know what you have to spend, you’ll make quicker and less stressful decisions en route and you’ll be able to pay the bills without a grimace once you get home.

When can we go?

Scheduling your vacation well can make a big difference in everyone’s experience of the trip.

Consider each individual. Most likely, tight school and work schedules will decide when you travel — but if possible, aim for a time slot that allows everyone to relax. For instance, an action-packed road trip sounds exciting, but it might be just the wrong medicine for a parent who’s squeezing it into a packed work schedule. End-of-summer trips may be tough for kids with back-to-school anxieties, and midyear trips that snatch kids from school sometimes cause more trouble than they’re worth.

Where do we go?

Make a list of destinations. What hot spots intrigue your clan? What adventures would you like to try? Draw up a big list, and don’t worry about coming up with too many ideas — you can return to this list year after year. Here are a few trails you can follow: relatives, friends, and coworkers (who love to report on their own successful trips), a professional travel agent, local chambers of commerce and state tourism boards, and magazines, the Internet, and local hotels and outfitters in the geographic areas you’re interested in.

Evaluate your family. A good vacation has to accommodate everyone in the family, no matter what their ages, limitations, or interests. While no destination will make everyone happy all the time, you should search vigilantly for those that offer a niche for each family member.

Involve your kids. The more involved your kids are in planning — especially during these early, brainstorming stages — the more likely they are to work to make the trip a success.

Experiment wisely. While experimentation can add spice to a trip, too much may overwhelm your kids (and you). If your child has her heart set on horseback riding, for example, make sure she tries it out at home before you put down a deposit on a dude ranch vacation.

Check the season. Be informed about travel conditions for the time of your trip and make sure you’re not heading for trouble (hurricane season in Florida, for example, or black-fly season in the Adirondacks). This is especially important if you’re cashing in on off-season deals.

Schedule appropriately. How much time do you need to give this particular destination its due? You don’t want to feel like you’re rushing through things — but neither do you want to run out of activities that will interest your kids.

Should we have an itinerary?

Drawing up a travel itinerary, whether it’s rough or detailed, will ensure that you travel wisely, hit the hot spots, and give everyone in your group a say in what you’ll see.

Include something for everyone. No doubt, each member of your family will have his or her own list of must-sees. If a unanimous vote on itinerary stops is out of the question, ask everyone to write down top choices, then create a schedule that guarantees each person at least one or two favorites. If your children span a wide age range, remind them that there will be some patient standing by while siblings (and Mom and Dad) have their moments in the sun.

Involve the kids (again). Once you’ve got the basic stops down, kids can help research destinations, plan driving routes, locate pit stops, and help plan rainy-day alternatives.

Make a plan, then break it. Don’t let your preplanned schedule get in the way of spontaneous delights. What if your kids want to ride that water slide for an extra three hours? One fun moment in hand is usually worth at least two on the itinerary.

Beat the crowds. Remember to head for popular attractions first thing in the morning or in late afternoon and early evening. Save the middle of the day for poolside fun or activities that take you off the beaten path and away from crowds.

Travel in tune with your family’s natural rhythms. Preschoolers tend to be at their best early in the day — a good time for structured activities. Many teens, on the other hand, are pictures of grogginess before noon. Adapt your itinerary to suit ingrained family habits — including your usual meal and nap times — and you’ll have smoother sailing. When visiting very popular destinations, take the time to find out in advance when their slowest periods are.

There’s nothing like a vacation. Foreign ports, beaches, adventure! Lost luggage, mosquitoes, stomach flu!

Life happens, even while we’re on vacation. Short of never leaving the house, how can one avoid the inevitable disappointments over those bumps in our holiday road? First of all, you must redefine what it means when things “go wrong.”

My dad grew up in California with the Sierras as his stomping ground, so my sisters and I did a lot of tent camping in places with names like “Devil’s Post Pile” and “Sawmill Flat.” We’d haul an old canvas tent, the kind that weighed about a thousand pounds and had to be hammered into the ground with metal spikes.

On one memorable trip, that tent was almost swept away in a flash flood, along with our ice chest, hiking boots, and the sleeping bags containing my sisters and me. Any reasonable parents camping with three children would have railed and cursed the sodden heavens over their ruined vacation. But what do I remember? My dad scooping me up out of my soggy sleeping bag and putting me in the back of the station wagon. My mom and dad laughing as they rescued the waterlogged blankets and my soaking older sisters. Everyone was laughing! Instead of a horrible, spoiled vacation, it was a jolly, hilarious adventure! Providing many stories for many cocktail parties to come.

Other summers found us stuck in the mud on the Sacramento Delta (mud fight!) missing trains in Spain, and watching as wild animals ate our breakfast. Nothing but fun. And I learned the following guiding principles for great trips:

• Avoid over-scheduling. Planning ahead can lead to a delightfully well-organized holiday, but if anything should “go wrong,” it can also lead to dark moods and lingering crankiness. Planning is important, to a point—just don’t create an itinerary to such a degree that you have no wiggle room.
• Get lost! Seriously. Give yourself permission to get lost. Once I was wandering around Paris, and I heard music. A bride and groom and their wedding party, just moseying up the street, with a goofy jazz band bringing up the rear. So I followed them. I had no idea where I was, or where we were going, but it was magical, and I saw streets that I might not have seen if I’d simply followed a guide book, or kept to a preordained schedule.
• Lower your expectations! It’s just so much less stressful. Assume you’ll be faced with adversity. When the volcano erupts and you can’t get home, when the trains stop running, when the motel has no vacancy, when your car gets stuck in the sand in the desert… you can laugh about it—and go with it. And it’ll be like no vacation you could ever dream up, much less plan.
